Unexpected debut Meulens in Major League
SAN FRANCISCO - Former national coach Hensley Meulens unexpectedly made his debut in the mecca of baseball, the American Major League Baseball.
51-year-old Meulens replaced manager Bruce Bochy in the San Francisco Giants game against Milwaukee Brewers. The Giants won 8-5.
Meulens, from Curaçao, may now call himself the first Dutch national to coach a team at the highest level of baseball. As national coach he led the Dutch Team in 2013 and 2017 to the fourth place in the World Baseball Classic.
According to the baseball association, Meulens has the ambition to become the manager of a Major League team. Last winter, he was one of the main candidates to succeed Joe Girardi as manager of the New York Yankees, but that position eventually went to Aaron Boone.
