Ruling on claim environmental organizations on oil refinery set for May 2
WILLEMSTAD - The ruling on the summary proceedings of the oil refinery Isla against the environmental organization SMOC, 25 local residents and Humanitarian Aid Foundation takes place on 2 May.
Yesterday the summary proceedings took place in which the Isla hopes that the lien of 75 million guilders on the assets of the refinery will be lifted. The three parties placed a lien in March because according to them the refinery violated the pollution standard. In 2010, the court ruled that the Isla can be fined if this happens.
Several trade unions and employees of the refinery gathered at Wilhelmina plaza yesterday to show their support for the refinery. They are worried about the timing of the claim: the negotiations for the future of the refinery are in full swing and the claim does not improve the position of Curacao in this.
