Record holder Martina confirms participation in 200 meters at FBK Games
WILLEMSTAD - Churandy Martina will return to Hengelo for the FBK Games in early June. The 33-year-old sprinter from Curaçao participates in the 200 meters at the athletics event in the Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadion.
Martina is the holder of the Dutch record on this number with 19.81 seconds. "I cannot imagine FBK Games without Churandy," says tournament director Hans Kloosterman.
The Curaçaoan born comes to Hengelo for the eleventh time. Martina ran there in 2009 as the first athlete ever on Dutch soil under 10 seconds on the 100 meters and raced in 2013 to the track record on the 200 meters.
"It's always nice to be able to sprint in front of my own audience," says Martina. "I am happy that I can start at the FBK Games again. I'm going to do my best and hope everyone comes to the stadium to watch. "
Martina participated last week in Florida on the 200 meters at the limit for the European Championships in Berlin. He also wants to defend his title on the 100 meters in the German capital and with the relay team a good result on the 4 × 100 meters.
Earlier Dafne Schippers confirmed her participation in the FBK Games already. The sprinter from Utrecht starts at 200 meters, the distance on which she is a double world champion.
The design of the FBK Games has changed slightly this year. "We start with a new formula," Kloosterman said earlier. "Less disciplines, more spectacle. We focus the parts as real battles, mostly around our Dutch top athletes."
The 37th edition of the FBK Games will be held on 3 June.
