Power failure affects large area of the island
WILLEMSTAD – A large part of the island has been without electricity for about one hour. It was that bad that even the downtown area the airport, which are often protected because of the economic impact, were confronted with the consequences of problems at Aqualectra.
According to the spokesperson of the utility company, Share Bikker, the power outage was caused by a short circuit that arose at the end of the afternoon at the substation in Tera Kòrá. At the same time, Zegu’s substation went off the network for an unknown reason.
This was crucial for the size of the area without electricity – about thirty to forty percent of the island – because the substation of Zegu is the link between the energy that the windmills supply and the network of Aqualectra. The utility company lost all that electricity and therefore it was not just a network problem between the two mentioned stations but also a capacity problem.
What was the cause of the short-circuit at the substation of Tera Kòrá is still under investigation. Meanwhile everything has been restored and as far the company’s knowledge, the short circuit did not cause any damage to the installations.
