‘People are chasing flamingos with drones’
WILLEMSTAD - Unique Curacao advocates for signs or a ban on drones in the vicinity of flamingos. That was confirmed by director Theo Van der Giessen. The request comes after an employee found a dead flamingo in the area of Jan Kok.
It cannot be said with certainty that a drone was responsible for this, but Van der Giessen considers the chance big. There are regular people, mostly tourists, who work with drones around Jan Kok.
“Often it does not stay with calm flying, but the birds are really hunted,” says Van der Giesen. He emphasizes that flamingos are vulnerable and cannot simply fly away easily. “They need a large starting distance and if there is none, they can easily break a leg.”
This morning the foundation has voiced its concerns in a letter to Minister Suzy Camelia-Romer of Nature and Environment.
