No position yet Cifa about new currency for Curaçao
WILLEMSTAD - The Curacao International Financial Services Association, Cifa, does not yet have a clear position on the introduction of a new currency for Curacao. This week during a parliamentary meeting, the possible introduction of the Caribbean guilder was discussed.
According to Minister Kenneth Gijsbertha the island has a serious problem and a decision has to be made as soon as possible.
The Dutch printing company stops printing Curacaos money, furthermore, both the paper money and the coins are not easy to manufacture by another company and the coins change quickly. Two options are possible: the current money is being upgraded or a new Caribbean guilder is introduced.
Anouschka Cova from Cifa says that the fact that her organization has not yet made itself heard does not mean that Cifa is not an opponent of a new currency. Whether or not her organization is in favor, is also not clear. Cifa also makes no statements about the consequences for the introduction of a new currency.
For the time being, no decision has been made yet and that is why Cova is not saying anything.
