No more floating market in Curaçao
WILLEMSTAD - It really happened. Something we thought would never happen. The floating fruit market in downtown Punda will close tomorrow. Tomorrow at 3 o'clock in the afternoon the last 4 boats will leave Curaçao.
The Venezuelans can no longer get fruit and vegetables from their own country because of the border closure imposed by the President of that country Nicolas Maduro. According to the Venezuelans, they do not receive any help from the authorities in Curaçao.
The fruit market on the quay in Punda has been around for 101 years. It has always been promoted not only as a fruit and vegetable market but also as a tourist attraction.
The government is already debating what it will do with this area. There were several suggestions including the possibility to give locals the opportunity to sell their products there.
