New medicine against malaria
WILLEMSTAD – There is a new medicine for malaria on the market: Tafenoquine. The authorities have given permission to use the drug in the United States.
It was discovered ten years ago and now it has finally reached the stage that it can actually be used as a medicine. That was always uncertain until now.
The drug is ‘a sister’ of an already existing medicine against malaria, but that existing medication should be taken during a fourteen days period. Tafenoquine can be taken at once, via a pill. If the pill is taken on time, within seven days, the patient won’t get sick. Another advantage of tafenoquine: the pill ensures that the malaria parasite disappears permanently.
