King’s Night and King’s Day in Pietermaai District
WILLEMSTAD - Like every year, King's Night and King's Day are also celebrated in Pietermaai District. The national holiday on April 27 starts on Thursday 26 April with the Night of Orange from 16.00 with the traditional royal market and from 19.30 with live music on the street at the famous cafés in the Nieuwestraat. The theme of Nacht van Oranje is 'Party to the MAXima' and on King's Day 'Chill'm a la Willem'.
In connection with King's Night and the preparations for the event, the Nieuwestraat will be closed for traffic on 26 April from 7:00 AM. The street opens again on April 27 from 00:00 after the Koningsdag event.
This year the Nieuwestraat will celebrate live music and games for children during King's Day on 27 April, including a 'kid’s stage' where magician Tom Presti will perform. At the games this year extra thought has been given to cooling off and we have a lot of water oriented games. The well-known free market is in the Pietermaaiweg and the Nieuwestraat. There are no less than fifty exhibitors signed up to sell items in their own stand, such as second-hand clothes, handmade jewelry and decorations. On 27 April, the Pietermaaiweg will therefore be partially closed for traffic from 7.00 am, so that visitors can browse the market at ease. In addition, live music will be provided by Miles Jazz Café, Ginger, 27 Curacao, La Cantina del Patron, Dutch Treat, Mundo Bizarro, Cafe Old Dutch, Cafe de Tijd, Bar.Ber, Happy BBQ place and Bistro Pietermaai.
After the great success of previous years, the Caribbean Ministry of Defense will be present again during King's Day and the Curaçao militia, Citro, the army, police, fire brigade, coast guard, the Volunteer Corps Curaçao and Red Cross have joined. They are at the event mainly for children, but adults are also very welcome to get acquainted with the different organizations and disciplines in a fun and playful way.
