Gijsbertha: Curaçao is not bankrupt
WILLEMSTAD - The Minister of Finance, Kenneth Gijsbertha, announced that Curaçao is not bankrupt. Several other politicians made this statement but the Minister denies it.
The government is in serious financial trouble but it can still fulfil its obligations. The Committee for Financial Supervision (CFT) has recently expressed its concerns. There is a budget deficit of 133 million guilders partly due to the construction of the new hospital and the problems with the local airline InselAir. The government has invested more than 35 million guilders to keep the airline in the air. According to the government, the airlines is important for the economy.
